Frequently Asked Questions

How is salary tax calculated in Nepal?

Nepal uses a progressive slab system — each rate applies only to the portion of income within its band, not the whole income. Start from total annual income (monthly salary × months plus any bonus), subtract eligible deductions, and apply slab rates to the remainder.

What are the income tax slabs for FY 2082/83?

FY 2082/83 uses six progressive bands. Single filer: first NPR 500,000 at 1% (Social Security Tax); next NPR 200,000 at 10%; next NPR 300,000 at 20%; next NPR 1,000,000 at 30%; next NPR 3,000,000 at 36%; above NPR 5,000,000 at 39%. Couple (married) filer: first NPR 600,000 at 1% (Social Security Tax); next NPR 200,000 at 10%; next NPR 300,000 at 20%; next NPR 900,000 at 30%; next NPR 3,000,000 at 36%; above NPR 5,000,000 at 39%. Each rate applies only to the income within that band.

What is proposed to change in FY 2083/84?

These rates are a budget proposal — pending Finance Act 2083 and not yet in effect. Presented in Budget 2083/84 (15 Jestha 2083 / 29 May 2026); effective from 1 Shrawan 2083 (~17 July 2026) only if enacted. Five unified bands for both single and couple filers: first NPR 1,000,000 at 1% (Social Security Tax); next NPR 500,000 at 10%; next NPR 1,000,000 at 20%; next NPR 1,500,000 at 27%; above NPR 4,000,000 at 29%. The top rate drops from 39% to 29%, and the separate couple schedule is removed.

What deductions reduce my taxable income?

Several items reduce taxable income before slab rates apply: life insurance premium up to NPR 40,000; health/medical insurance premium up to NPR 20,000; private building insurance premium up to NPR 5,000; SSF, EPF, and CIT contributions combined are capped at the lower of NPR 500,000 or one-third of annual assessable income; remote area allowance (NPR 50,000 / 40,000 / 30,000 / 20,000 / 10,000 for categories A through E). Female taxpayers with income solely from employment in Nepal receive a 10% rebate on the computed tax.

What is the SSF waiver?

If you contribute to the Social Security Fund, the 1% social security tax on the first slab is waived, so the contribution both lowers taxable income and removes that first-band charge. The deduction (which reduces taxable income, subject to the combined SSF+EPF+CIT cap) and the Band 1 waiver are two independent benefits — a salaried SSF contributor should apply both.

Is this calculator a substitute for professional tax advice?

No — it's an estimation tool. For filing, payroll, or your specific situation, consult a qualified tax professional, as rules change with each Finance Act.

What is my take-home pay (net salary) after tax in Nepal?

Your take-home pay is your gross salary minus income tax and any applicable SSF/EPF contributions. Enter your monthly salary above and the calculator instantly shows your net pay after all deductions — both under FY 2082/83 rates and the proposed FY 2083/84 rates — so you can see exactly how much you keep each month.

How do progressive tax brackets (slabs) work in Nepal?

Nepal uses a progressive slab system: each rate only applies to the income within that band, not to your entire salary. For FY 2082/83 (single filer), the first NPR 500,000 is taxed at 1%, the next NPR 200,000 at 10%, and so on up to 39% above NPR 5,000,000. This means earning more always increases your take-home pay — a higher bracket never reduces your net income. The calculator applies each bracket correctly and shows a full slab-by-slab breakdown.
